WELCOME!

On October 16, 1995, I and millions of other Black men participated in the Million Man March. It was an historic day. A great day. It was without question the largest gathering of Black men to ever assemble in the US and probably the world. Those of us in attendance took a pledge to “love our brother as we love ourself.”

Today some would have us believe we’re living in a “post-racial society.” We have a Black president. We have Black billionaires, millionaires. We have black cards and black cars. But have we changed our condition as a people from where we were on the eve of the Civil War? Economically the answer is no. Blacks today, own even less than we collectively owned in 1864. Health disparities? We lead the nation in health challenges and have the largest percentage of “uninsured.” Social justice? We’re still sentenced disproportionately and receive longer sentences for the same crimes. And psychologically? Have we learned to “love our brother (sister) as we love ourselves?”
P.S. Did you see any 14th anniversary coverage of the MMM in the mainstream media?

NAMD 8th ANNUAL "BUY BLACK" features the  Empowerment Experiment
Black consumer spending is projected to reach $1.2 trillion by 2012. There has never been a more urgent time for the Black community to begin to implement strategies that will result in re-circulating  a larger percentage of these dollars to  Black-owned businesses and the Black community.

NAMD 8th Annual Buy Black
NAMD Philadelphia will be hosting its 8th Annual Buy-Black Holiday Shopping Expo on Saturday, December 12th 2009. The "family friendly" event will welcome the Empowerment Experiment to the City of Brotherly Love. In January 2009, the Anderson family pledged to live off of Black-owned businesses for one year.  This unprecedented public commitment has sparked a movement. Without developing and implementing new solutions, the Black community is headed to a future of being a permanent economic underclass in America.

SHOPPING WHILE BLACK?

Racial profiling in stores is so prevalent that researchers have given it a name -- Shopping While Black. When it happens, Black shoppers are made to feel both unwelcome and under suspicion. If you had a front row seat to this kind  of racism, would you take action? ABC New' "What Would You Do?" set up the largest hidden camera operation in teh show's history in New York City's Soho neighborhood at the chic clothing boutique Unpomela. It was practically the only store the show could find willing to experiment with something so controversial. In a 2007 Gallup survey, 47 percent of Black people surveyed said they are not treated equally by retailers. More than one-quarter of those surveyed felt they were targeted because of their race while shopping within the the last 30 days.READ MORE

The lawsuit will move forward in the case of Regina Kimbell v Chris Rock. Although a Los Angeles judge denied an injunction to halt the release of Rock's "Good Hair" the legal proceedings are far from over. Kimbell, producer of the film "My Nappy Roots," alleges that Rock did not tell her that he had a deal with HBO to produce a film about Black hair when he asked to see her film. In court papers, her claim is supported by her co-producer who was present at the screening where Rock has admitted he saw her film.

On October 5, Kimbell filed a $5 million copyright infringement lawsuit. Kimbell's idea for the movie began in 2002 when her daughter Brighton, then 16-years-old, wrote an essay, which served as the starting point conceptually of a five-minute film, mentored by her mother. As a result, over the years the award -winning film evolved from an essay, to a short film, and now a feature length film. The feature-length is a definitive documentary that examines the legacy of Black hair care through cultural, societal, and political issues in the African American community over time. An extended "My NappyRoots" trailer is available on YouTube  For more information click READ MORE

THE DOW SAYS WOW: THE PEOPLE  SAY  OWWW!  By Mumia Abu Jamal (with audio)

Mumia Abu Jamal
The recent rise of the Dow Jones Industrial Average which recently hit 10,000 points was a time of "pop champagne" corks and celebrations on Wall Street. If you listened hard enough, you could hear strains of "we're in the money, we're in the money" wafting through Wall Street air.  READ MORE

PA STIMULUS DOLLARS SET TO ROLL OUT
"Some of the people getting funds haven't done inclusive outreach in 25 years, so why expect it now?" Norm Bond

Are you feeling stimulated? Are you getting any of the "green money?" Have you seen any advertising in your favorite media telling you how to get the training for weatherization? In Pennsylvania $125 million in federal monies is about to quietly hit the market. It seems a lot of the usual suspects will be riding the gravy train - and they're  not African-American. READ MORE

UNCOVERING INDOCTRINATED RACISM By Ezrah Aharone

Ezrah Aharone July 2nd, 2009 marked 45 years since President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act to initiate equality. This anniversary coincides with the recent Senate Resolution "Apologizing for the Enslavement and Racial Segregation of African-Americans," which expressed America's "recommitment to the principle  that all people are created equal." While these gestures appear impressive as political theory, in actuality, "Created Equal" on paper differs from "Created Equal" in practice.

Since Lincoln's paperwork freed us in 1865 and Johnson's paperwork dubbed us equal in 1964, it's accurate to conclude that freedom and equality are not politically identical. And although "paper equality" traces to the Declaration of Independence in 1776, disparities cited in the Urban League's State of Black America 2009, verify that racial equality is still a dream yet deferred. But if all people are "Created Equal" why then has equality been a drip, drip, drip process for us?"
