" I appreciate the opportunity to share the info with people that want it - and particularly those willing to do something."
Norm Bond

Dr. Carter G. Woodson understood the need for Black people to be able to think and do for ourselves. Education was the tool, the vehicle which would allow Black people to regain our rightful heritage and begin to tell our own story, from our perspective. Even today only a handful of Blacks have accepted this wisdom and even fewer are working to apply it on a daily basis. So I’m glad you’re reading this. It was Woodson who said, "The large majority of the Negroes who have put on the finishing touches of our best colleges, however, are all but worthless in the uplift of their people." Well…

As we move through this month one thing is clear. Black people need major uplift and it’s going to take our own people to do the heavy lifting. As the economic crisis continues to permeate through the world, Blacks in America are at great risk to be targeted for additional predatory schemes. We have seen how major financial institutions targeted “financially unsophisticated” Blacks and entire urban neighborhoods for their newly created loans and wiped out millions in generational wealth from the Black community while earning a handsome profit for the banking institutions and their senior executives. Many of these same banks still refuse to make fair loans to African Americans.  In education, a Black mother, Kelley Williams Bolar, recently spent nine days in jail while trying to secure equal education for her children in a predominately white school district in Ohio. And in terms of jobs, the Black unemployment rate, according to the latest jobs report is 86% higher than that of whites in America. It will get worse before it improves. And there are numerous other battlefronts on which to engage in this righteous struggle for equality, justice and economic and psychological freedom.

This brings us back to Woodson and thankfully those brothers and sisters who are in the small minority of Blacks who ARE valuable in the uplift of their people. Whether they have the finishing touches of our best colleges, or the sandpaper polish of the inner-city streets – there is a growing national cadre of Blacks who are focused on the business of uplifting our people in 2011 and beyond. They are working to organize, mobilize, and monetize our communities in ways that are beneficial. They’re online, offline, and in some places where you might be surprised to find them. These are our modern day Black History makers. You will find many of them discussed right here in The Bond Report.  Check out our sponsors, visit our web links, read and apply the content you’ll find in our articles. It is through your active engagement, at whatever level you’re willing to commit, that we benefit individually and collectively. Let’s make our history a never ending story.

Peace,

BLACK HISTORY AND VINDICATIONALISM - By EZRAH AHARONE

Ezrah Aharone

As we celebrate another Black History Month during these political times of world turmoil and uprise, it’s important for America to project a world image that it has “turned the page” of racism in its own blood-stained history.  And while the relevance of this month has even been called into question since the advent of a Black president, I’m reminded of the African proverb that: “Until the lion has his historian, the hunter will always be the hero.”

As such, when it comes to slavery and what is popularly categorized as “Black History,” America practices the seductive allure of what I call “Historical Vindicationalism,” where the harsh realities of events and narratives are masked and sterilized, while the end-product of Americanization gets epitomized as being lofty-enough to excuse and acquit the otherwise flagrant inhumanities of its means.  Thus, we as African Americans are psychologically expected to deem the inflicted pains of our history as well worth the ascribed value of the prize of Americanization.  READ MORE

"NUMBER OF BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES INCREASED AT TRIPLE THE NATIONAL RATE" CENSUS BUREAU

From 2002 to 2007, the number of Black-owned businesses increased by 60.5 percent to 1.9 million, more than triple the national rate of 18.0 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners. Over the same period, receipts generated by Black-owned businesses increased 55.1 percent to $137.5 billion.

Black business owners

This is good news and speaks to the interest in entrepreneurship by an increasing number of African Americans. “Black-owned businesses continued to be one of the fastest growing segments of our economy, showing rapid growth in both the number of businesses and total sales during this time period,” said Census Bureau Deputy Director Thomas Mesenbourg.

Of course this data does not show the results of the Great Recession which started in December of 2007 and officially ended in  June 2009. According to Ivonne Cunarro, Chief Knowledge Management Unit, Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), the 2007-2011 data won’t be available until 2015 since the Survey of Business Owners is conducted every five years as part of the economic census.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BLOX: A step by step guide teaching felons and those who risk becoming felons 22 realistic income producing options :By Michael A. Brewer

thinkingoutsidetheblox

I was happy to sit down recently with entrepreneur Jameel Worthy to discuss BRZEE Publishing's newly released book "THINKING OUTSIDE THE BLOX." The book is well researched and presents realistic income earning options to those who may find themselves labeled as "felons" by the American just-us system and the Prison Industrial Complex. Writer Michael A. Brewer shares twenty-two realistic income producing options that can help people avoid going back into a system that has become a revolving door and disproportionately impacts African American men in particular.

Not ready to rest on their laurels Worthy and his team have launched a website, a television show, and are doing interviews and speaking engagements to move the book and their message directly into the community and the teeth of the prison system with a number of direct marketing tactics.

I highly recommend you pick-up a copy and visit their website because there is a tremendous need for this type of practical information in today's economy. The effort to create more entrepreneurs, provide income producing options, and reach an often ignored segment of our society is one that demands our full support.  READ MORE

A new audio documentary about the fight for equal rights on America’s roads and transit lines is now available for free download or for you to listen to via your computer. Many African American communities were bulldozed in the 1960s to make way for highways. Today, bus service to poor neighborhoods is cut in favor of more expensive rail. This collaborative reporting project from Transportation Nation and WNYC visits communities across America where people of color still struggle for equal treatment in public transportation.  REVERSE 90 WANTS MORE DOLLARS FOR BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES

The nation’s one million plus Black-owned businesses account for more than $100 billion in annual sales. Black buying power is estimated at $913 billion nationwide in 2010, meaning less than 10 percent of dollars spent by Blacks are supporting these enterprises.

The African American Chamber of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware (AACC) designed  a new program titled Reverse 90 to address the problem. It utilizes discounts and deals from member companies to draw customers to the Chamber’s 400 member businesses.

blackandnobel

Plenty of excuses are offered up when it comes to not supporting Black-owned businesses, from “not being able to find one” to “having had a bad experience with one in the past“, advocates will tell you. With the unveiling of the new website Reverse 90.com, the Chamber hopes to put an end to them. The site showcases places to eat, shop and secure a range of other services from quality Black-owned firms, all of which are members of the AACC.  READ MORE
