Information Society of Barbados (ISB) Hosts Third International Conference: “ICT : The Catalyst for Economic Development” with Norm Bond as Panelist

Bridgetown, Barbados, W.I. (November 2, 2011) – Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are now “widely accepted by developing countries as a critical tool in their efforts to eradicate poverty, enhance human development and achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)” states James Corbin, President of the Information Society of Barbados (ISB).

In order to provide an opportunity for Barbadians and their Caribbean neighbors to interact with international speakers of global reputation on this topic, the ISB presented “@event Caribbean 2011”. A global array of technology and business leaders presented thought provoking presentations on how ICTs can be the catalyst for economic development.

Senator The Honourable Haynesley Benn, Minister of Commerce and Trade for Barbados delivered the welcoming address to participants. He noted the “negative ripple effects which the recession in the United States of America has had during the last three years on our capacity to trade equitably as we do so much of our business with that country.” The ISB Conference presents a valuable opportunity for persons to think creatively and if not presently employed, be innovative and turn their talents into marketable goods and services.

Keynote presentations included “ICT: the Catalyst for Economic Development in Small Island States” by Mark Bamber, Economic Advisory Partner, KPMG Malta; and “Using Technology to Organise the World’s Information” by Chris DiBona, Open Source and Public Sector Programs Manager, Google, Inc. Additional topics addressed during the two-day conference included sessions on Privacy, Mobile Applications, Cloud Technologies, Health, Innovation and Social Media.

Philadelphia-based entrepreneur Norm Bond served as a panelist on the discussion of “The Importance of Social Media in a Changing Information World”. The panel was moderated by Anthony Yearwood, Director ICT Sales, Illuminat. Additional panelists included Corey Graham 2.0, CEO Drenalin Productions and Bill French, Founder IpadCTO, Senior Editor IphoneCTO.

More than 200 registrants participated in the Conference and Exhibition Programme held Tuesday October 25 and Wednesday October 26, 2011 at the Lloyd Erskine Saniford Centre in Barbados, W.I. Conference sponsors included KPMG, Google, Illuminat, Barbados Yellow Pages, TeleBarbados, and Caribbean Development Bank.
